July is the month of intense heat, ripe red watermelon, and fiery red fireworks. Rubies, then, are the appropriate birthstone for the “reddest” month of the year. According to Hindu beliefs, the inner-fire of a ruby causes its brilliant color that cannot be extinguished.
Rubies are of the corundum family, the second hardest minerals known to mankind. (Diamonds are the first, of course.) Sapphires also belong to this family.
Although all rubies are highly prized, the most valuable come from Burma where pigeon-blood red rubies can found. These are faceted, sparkly, and a true red color.
A unique member of the ruby family is a cabochon-cut star ruby. The stars in the these rubies, visible when a beam of light shines over-top, are created when the stone’s silk inclusions line up in a star shape.
DIG’s star ruby exhibits the rounded, cabochon cut. With its purple hues, this unique stone nearly looks pink. DIG is currently designing a beautiful piece of jewelry for a customer to complement this rare gem. Stay up to date with us to see the finished piece.
In the meantime, hear the advice ruby expert Roy Albers has to offer when purchasing rubies in the video below.
